In This Place

Mt. Spokane, WA- July 14

In This Place

Last night I slept on a mountain
Alone in hundreds of acres,
A ‘solo’ without having planned.

The half moon had sequestered the sky,
Stars on the wait for that orb to retire.
The mountain lions and black bears reportedly near
Had likewise retired,
Keeping me company at their wide berth.

The deepest kind of quiet prevailed-
No wind, no birds, no ticking or humming.
Just my heartbeat, felt against my hand,
Making peace with the peace of this place.

This morning the gophers keep watch
As I drink my coffee in the sun,
I think they might have inspected my car
As they hunt and gather.

And I wonder why I would ever leave here.
The very core of my purpose is here-
The solitary journey to see what is left
Without the noise.

Today I find such gratitude resides.
Despite my busy mind, still flirting and flitting
From thought to thought,
There is room for such delight
In the slowed-down moments of this life.
