I sit at the counter while Carol cuts cabbage for coleslaw. She just finished making watermelon popsicles out of past-prime watermelon. Food is celebrated in this food stylist's home. So in the past 3 days we've gone to two farmers markets and three food stores. I picked 'perfect' beans at the Portland Farmers Market with her for her farm on-location shoot on Wednesday. Some photos of our food travels:
Just couldn't resist
Absolutely amazing flower stand with 6 people making bouquets as fast as they could
Walla Walla, Washington onions
We bought some specialty items to try: squash blossoms, morel mushrooms (which I'd never had), and napoles (a cactus fruit that required kevlar to de-pricker).
We made a cauliflower/parmesan-crusted pizza with caramelized onions, fresh mozzarella and basil, squash blossoms with baby zukes, and saute`ed morel mushrooms.

The napoles were.... different. Tart and a little slimy, but the feta added dimension.
Farmers markets will be one of my targets over my travels. Food brings out the best in people, there's just a vibrancy to the atmosphere. People know how great it is to participate in this joint venture of farmer and consumer. Carol has whet my whistle to try new and different things. I'll be 'yumming' my way across the USA.
Yay! I've always wanted to do a road trip and go to all different farmers markets and blog about it...so I am going to live vicariously through you!
